This two-hour lecture introduces the life and work of Alvar Aalto, one of the most influential architects and designers of the twentieth century. Emerging at a pivotal moment in Finland’s cultural history, Aalto helped redefine modernism by combining functionalist principles with natural materials and organic forms.

Through iconic buildings such as the Paimio Sanatorium, Viipuri Library, and Villa Mairea, as well as celebrated furniture and glass designs created in collaboration with Aino Aalto and Artek, we will explore how Aalto developed a distinctly Finnish approach to modern architecture and design. The lecture will examine the relationship between modernism, functionalism, nature, craftsmanship, and everyday life, while considering Aalto’s place within the broader history of European modernism.
