Online talk (Zoom)
Friday 21 August, from 10 to 11:30 am
Cost: £ 10 (scroll down for payment button)
Frida Kahlo is among the most recognisable artists of the twentieth century, yet her work remains far more complex than the familiar image. This two-hour talk explores Kahlo as a modern painter whose art was both intensely personal and profoundly political.
Drawing on her self-portraits, we will examine how she transformed experiences of illness, disability, love, loss, and identity into a powerful visual language unlike any other.
Beyond her deeply personal painted works, we will consider how she carefully fashioned her own image, in order to engage with ideas of “Mexican-ess” central to the cultural and political debates of the time.
We will place Kahlo within the artistic and political currents of post-revolutionary Mexico, exploring her engagement with nationalism, indigenous culture, Marxism, and the international avant-garde. We will consider her often turbulent relationship with Diego Rivera, her connections to Surrealism, and the ways in which her paintings challenge conventional distinctions between private experience and public statement.
